Miss List...Buenos Aires

Things I’m going to miss about Buenos Aires

  • The trees. The beautiful magical trees. The intersection of Thames and Guatemala turned my head every time: to look and see a street cradled in trees that almost meet in the middle to create a canopy, or better yet a treehouse in the middle of the city.

  • The coffee houses. The coffee culture is strong in BsAs. Some of my favorite places in BsAs are coffee houses. They are welcoming, comforting, and do not push the limits of my Spanish. The Spanish I use at a coffee house makes me feel fluent. We got a lot of rain in BsAs and the silver lining to all that precipitation was it forced me inside, usually into a coffee house: a great place to get out of the rain and warm cup with a cup of coffee to cradle. Honorable mentions to Felix Felicis & Co and Cuervo Cafe.

  • All the Ohana living in the same building.

  • The shopping. The boutiques in BsAs are not for everyone, but they are for me. The selection is unique and most things have some sort of embellishment, just the way I like it. I cannot wait to travel with the ability to shop more. These two suitcases are limiting, but budget friendly.

  • The golden hour or la hora de oro. The most beautiful time of day as the sun goes down and the trees frame the changing colors.

  • The arts culture. Art is everywhere you look: on the streets, in the cafes. You don’t have to look far to be inspired.

  • The people. Friendly, warm, and welcoming.

  • The feeling of knowing where I was going.

  • Tonno. It was great having a go to restaurant so close to home. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, always delicious. But the best part was my friendly server Roberto who always welcomed me in with a smile.

Things I won’t miss about Buenos Aires

  • Alway having to walk with my eyes down because either the sidewalk was missing or you were a footfall away from stepping in dog shit (it was everywhere).

  • The cash flow situation. The issue here is two fold. First, BsAs is a very cash friendly city. You need to go anywhere with the expectation that it might be cash only. This sort of preparation requires more cash in hand than I’m used to carrying. And I would be fine with losing out on miles by paying cash over card, if cash were easier to come by, which leads me to my next...

  • The ATM situation. Finding an ATM with cash in it, is a daily lottery in BsAs. The problem with being a cash based society is that everyone is withdrawing cash. Forget trying to get cash towards the end or beginning of the month, it’s gone. BsAs also has the distinction of having the most fluctuation in their inflation rate. The exchange rate would change from one day to the next. If you saw the rate drop in your favor, you would hope to find an ATM with cash.
