Miss List...Mexico City

Things I’m going to miss about Mexico City

  • The weather. I was there in February and the weather was perfection. Similar to Goldilocks porridge, it was not too hot, not too cold, but just right, every single day.

  • Walks along Avenida Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a former race track turned into an elliptical avenue that borders Parque Mexico. The median that runs down the middle of the street is a pedestrians dream: free of traffic and tree lined on both sides. And depending on the time of day, it felt like my own personal arboretum. There was no sweeter feeling than when I felt like I had it all to myself.

  • Our apartment. I was lucky enough to call so many awesome apartments home while on RY and my last was no different. It’s greatest feature was the floor to ceiling windows that spanned both floors of the unit. It never got old to be greeted by that view.

  • Parque Mexico. I love any green space, but there was something magical about Parque Mexico. Passing it multiple times a day, it quickly became one of my Mexico City hallmarks.

  • Lunch. Most days you will find me eating a sandwich and chips for lunch. I never tire of the two. Mexico City had two of my faves. The turkey and manchego wrap at Frutos Prohibidos: nothing fancy, but simply perfect. I have a wicked salt tooth and came to find in CDMX that Fritos can be improved upon...just add limón y sal.

  • Sitting outside at Volador Cafe and watching the world go by.

  • The flower stand across the street from our apartment. I came to realize over the course of the year that I have a thing for flower stalls Maybe it’s the romantic in me, but I was charmed by the fact that it was open all night, as if flowers are as much of an overnight necessity as cough syrup.

  • The people of CDMX, particularly Sofia Margarita. What can I say, I was charmed by Sofia from the minute I met her. You know how you meet someone and immediately think to yourself “I want to be their friend” that was my first impression of Sofia.  I got to spend some time with her one and one and she affirmed that impression.

  • Susanna. Oh Susanna, how I miss you. Susanna was my first roommate on RY. We immediately clicked and from that moment on she was one of those people that felt like she had always been in my life. We requested each other every month after and finally got paired up again for the final month. There are so many wonderful things about Susanna, but there are two things I will miss the most. The first is the natural positivity that she radiates onto anyone she is around. But what I will miss most is the person I am when she’s around. I’m a little more care-free, a little more relaxed, and positively me.

Things I won’t miss about Mexico City

  • It’s sprawling size. I explored the different neighborhoods of CDMX more than any other city. One more charming than the next. Yet I won’t miss the minimum 30 minute cab ride to get from one to the other. It’s the most populous metro area in the Western Hemisphere and it feels it with 21.2 million people in the metro area and 8.9 million people and counting in the city proper.
